The name "You Yang" is derived from Aboriginal terms meaning "big mountain" or "bald," with potential connections to the Woiwurrung word for granite stone. The Yawangi people historically expanded natural rock hollows to create wells that provided water during dry seasons, and the surrounding area was known as Morong-morongoo due to the abundance of murnong. Terindah Estate provides a fine lookout of the You Yangs across Corio bay.
