Geelong Waterfront
Corio Bay
The local Wautharong people originally named the bay "Jillong" and the surrounding land "Corayo," but by the late 1830s, these names were Anglicised to "Corio" and "Geelong" after European surveyors mapped the area. The bay received three new artificial reefs in 2021 to bolster fish populations and the local fishing industry.
You Yangs
The name "You Yang" is derived from Aboriginal terms meaning "big mountain" or "bald," with potential connections to the Woiwurrung word for granite stone. The Yawangi people historically expanded natural rock hollows to create wells that provided water during dry seasons, and the surrounding area was known as Morong-morongoo due to the abundance of murnong. Terindah Estate provides a fine lookout of the You Yangs across Corio bay.
